Abstract for: Working with the Complexities of an Ecosystem Transition Zone: A Systems Thinking Approach

The East of Tirtol, in Odisha, India, represents a tightly coupled socio-ecological system where coastal and inland processes interact to shape both productivity and vulnerability. Its nature amplifies climate risks while supporting agriculture, making it essential to adopt integrated and context-specific approaches for sustainable livelihood and disaster resilience. This study applies a systems thinking approach to examine the interlinkages between ecosystems, livelihoods, climate change, and disaster risks in the region. Using participatory field engagement,causal loop diagrams (CLDs) and system archetypes the research analyses both rapid-onset hazards such as floods and cyclones, and slow-onset processes including salinity intrusion, groundwater depletion, and soil degradation. The study underscores the importance of aligning policies with ecological realities and adopting a systems thinking approach. This would involve shifting from groundwater-based irrigation to surface water-based systems, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and recognising the ecological functions of floods. It also requires integrating health risks into disaster management frameworks. By focusing on feedback loops and long-term system behaviour, rather than short-term outputs, more sustainable and resilient interventions can be designed. The study emphasises the need for integrated, system-based planning that aligns with local hydrological and ecological contexts. By framing East of Tirtol as an ecosystem transition zone and applying systems thinking, the research contributes to the need for having a place-based understanding of issues and developing plans accordingly.
