Abstract for: A Causal Loop Mapping Approach for Multi-dimensional Equity Modelling of Electric Vehicle Charging Station

Current electric vehicles (EV) charging station research often treats equity as a static, one-dimensional constraint within optimization models ​[1], [2]​. Fragmented across accessibility and cost studies, it lacks integration and ignores how inequities emerge from interactions among power systems, travel demand, and regulations ​[3]​. Without a systems perspective, planners miss feedback that entrench disparities. This study examines systemic drivers of inequity and develops strategies for fair, community-focused charging access. This study uses a mixed-method causal analysis combining a systematized literature review with grounded theory ​[4]​ based on the miner-prospector continuum ​[5]​. The process occurs in three phases: extracting causal mechanisms from Scopus literature using PRISMA-ScR, coding them into 179 cause–effect pairs, and clustering these into five systemic pillars. Finally, the relationships are integrated into a comprehensive Causal Loop Diagram (CLD) using Vensim PLE for systems analysis. This study advances System Dynamics and mobility justice by moving equity modeling from static indicators to a dynamic, feedback-based approach derived from clustered causal pillars. It is among the first to analyze EV charging equity through endogenous feedback that show how inequities evolve over time. The framework also pinpoints high-leverage intervention points capable of disrupting reinforcing cycles of disadvantage and promoting fairer charging access.
