Abstract for: The impact of modelling versus clustering on information elaboration

In this paper we look at the impact of modelling on team members’ ability to exchange and elaborate information and learning. We compare teams using modelling versus clustering in order to make decisions in the TOPSIM management simulation. This context of a complex management simulation allows for using a complex, realistic but at the same time controlled setting. Hypotheses were tested in a study with student groups engaged in management simulation TOPSIM. Students are randomly assigned to teams of usually four to six members. In between gaming rounds, students evaluated results and made decisions for the next round. Teams were instructed to use either clustering or modelling to support their evaluation rounds. We compare conditions on number of concepts discussed, elaboration and learning. Our preliminary analysis compares five clustering to five modelling groups, on the basis of transcripts of group discussions and posttest measurements of learning. Initial results indicate that modelling groups outperform clustering groups in terms of concepts discussed, elaboration and learning. This paper contributes to our knowledge on modelling impacts, by analysing process and results in a complex as well as controlled setting. Further analysis will look into more groups and address additional variables such as motivation and ability.
