Abstract for: Systemic effect of climate change and energy insecurity on health and wellbeing of older adults in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC)
Older adults in Low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) are rapidly increasing and face heightened vulnerability to climate change due to physiological sensitivity and limited adaptive capacity. Climate change impacts combined with energy insecurity worsen disease risks, mental health issues, and healthcare disruptions. Fragile health systems, unreliable energy access, and reliance on biomass fuels further compound these vulnerabilities, yet the interconnected effects of ageing, climate, and energy remain insufficiently studied. The study applies System Dynamics Modeling to examine interactions between climate change, energy insecurity, and ageing. It begins with literature review and problem identification, followed by development of a causal loop diagram informed by expert consultations. Further stages include quantitative model formulation, validation through stakeholder engagement, and stress-testing to explore system behavior and identify effective adaptation strategies. A draft causal loop diagram has been developed and is being refined through expert input, highlighting key system relationships and feedback loops that influence health outcomes within the climate, energy, and health nexus. The study emphasizes the need for integrated, system-based approaches to address the complex interconnections of climate change, energy insecurity, and ageing. By advancing a dynamic modeling framework, it aims to inform resilient, and age-responsive health systems. The findings will support policymakers in designing targeted interventions to protect older populations in LMICs under evolving climate and energy stresses.
