Abstract for: Charting the Transition: Drivers and Barriers to Green Technology Adoption in a Capital-Intensive Industry
We look at the Green Technology Adoption (GTA) and theory of diffusion of innovation literature and see that antecedents of GTA have been studied in isolation. We address the gap that these antecedents are inter-connected, and that a shift in one factor can have an impact on the entire system related to GTA. We study the Dutch Maritime Industry that is currently going through this transition. We used Vensim PLE to draw causal loop diagrams (CLD) with the help of stakeholders from the Dutch Maritime Industry. We conducted 5 sessions with 7 participants per session. The 5 unique CLDs were aggregated into one exhaustive CLD, that shows the complete system view of the ongoing transition and the causal impact factors have on one another. The result of aggregating the 5 CLDs is one comprehensive CLD that overlooks the entire ongoing transition. We came up with 9 reinforcing and 1 balancing feedback loop that has an impact on our dependent variable (DV) which is the "Adoption of Zero-Emission Shipping". We are able to show that sector-level transition needs to be studied by understanding the inter-connection factors have, and how they impact GTA. Traditional diffusion of innovation (Rogers, 2003) assumes that once technology has matured sufficiently, adoption will follow. We show that is not the case, since currently mature alternative technologies exist, but they are hampered by limited availability of infrastructure and strict regulations. We also show that for GTA focus needs to be on the Total Cost of Ownership (CAPEX & OPEX). Our research has geographical and industry level limitations.
