Abstract for: Simulation model for studying the deployment of electric vehicles in the residential sector of Chile
This paper addresses the scarcity of modelling and empirical studies on electromobility in Latin America and the Caribbean, contributing a replicable and adaptable framework for equitable and effective energy transitions In this context, it proposes a simulation model based on system dynamics modelling to represent the market transition from internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) to electric vehicles (EVs) in the residential sector of Chile. The model is designed to examine the dynamic relationships between consumer decisions, market conditions, and population growth, and how these factors influence the composition of the vehicle fleet. To this end, economic, social, and technological factors are incorporated into the analysis The paper presents a simulation framework that integrates economic and regulatory dimensions, as well as region-specific characteristics. Chile is selected as a case study due to its progress in promoting electric mobility in Latin America. The model analyses how public policies, incentives, and infrastructure development can help overcome adoption barriers and foster the wider diffusion of EVs. The main contribution of this paper is the introduction of the first regionally disaggregated system dynamics model for Chile, designed to assess policies aimed at promoting electric vehicle adoption in the residential sector, representing a first step towards the decarbonisation of the transport sector.
