Abstract for: FeliXSim: An Interactive Simulation Environment for Global Systems Modeling in Climate and Sustainability Contexts

Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) are essential for evaluating the long-term consequences of human actions on the Earth system, yet their complexity often restricts access to specialized researchers. This paper introduces FeliXSim, an open-source, browser-based Interactive Simulation Environment (ISE) designed to make the FeliX IAM accessible to non-expert stakeholders. FeliXSim is unique for focusing on behavior changes and demand-side mitigation in the food system while covering scenario outcomes for climate, food, land use, and biodiversity. FeliXSim is based on the SDEverywhere toolchain and WebAssembly to enable high-performance in real-time scenario exploration. It enables simulating multiple type of scenarios from impact assessment to tradeoff analysis, and features a structure-behavior display, a "survey function" to capture personal preferences and a multi-scenario mode to facilitate comparison of more than two scenarios. FeliXSim can support both evidence-based policy deliberation and educational applications in systems thinking. While currently limited by its global aggregation and browser requirements, future developments aim to incorporate regional heterogeneity.
