Abstract for: Analysis of Feedback Structures and Simulation Modeling on the Impacts of Korea’s Five Demographic Reversals

South Korea is currently undergoing a profound demographic transformation.This study conceptualizes these transformations as Korea’s Five Demographic Reversals—a set of critical regime shifts in which historically stable demographic hierarchies are reversed. These include: (1) deaths exceeding births, (2) single-person households exceeding multi-person households, (3) unmarried individuals exceeding married individuals, (4) the capital region population exceeding the non-capital population, and (5) the population aged 65 and above exceeding the population aged 0–64. This paper frames these reversals as manifestations of shifts in dominant feedback structures within a complex adaptive system. Drawing on system dynamics methodology, the study develops an integrated analytical framework combining causal loop analysis and simulation modeling to investigate the nonlinear interactions among demographic variables. The findings suggest that the simultaneous progression of these reversals generates reinforcing feedback loops that accelerate population decline, social atomization, and spatial polarization. Preliminary simulation results indicate that the synchronization of these reversal processes significantly shortens the population halving time and expands the spatial scope of extinction-risk regions. The study contributes to the literature by introducing a unified conceptual framework for demographic regime shifts and by identifying high-leverage policy intervention points capable of altering long-term system trajectories. Future research should focus on further refining the quantitative model, incorporating behavioral and economic variables, and conducting detailed policy simulations.
