Abstract for: A framework of system traditions for use in organization and management research

A systems perspective is increasingly used as a theoretic lens in organization and management research. However, two challenges arise. First, as there is no single unified “systems view”, awareness is needed for the multiplicity of systems traditions. Second, respective approaches need to be applied with an understanding of their underlying assumptions and limitations. We propose a framework of system traditions that outlines their foci, view of human action and both original and evolved goals. We use this framework analyze synergies and potential tensions among these traditions. By clarifying these distinctions, we aim to support informed, rigorous and intentional use of systems approaches in organizational and management research and provide language for system dynamicists to build bridges with scholars working in these domains.
