Abstract for: Before, during, after: When and how to build causal loop diagrams in interviews?

What is the best way to create a causal loop diagram from an interview? In this immersive workshop we will explore three approaches to creating a CLD: Before, during and after the interview. Participants will create mini CLDs to experience the benefits and pitfalls of the different approaches. As a group we will discuss these approaches to knowledge production and the effect on robustness of data. We will cover: • Designing interviews to elicit feedback structure • Transitioning from narrative data to variables and causal links • Constructing CLDs before, during, and after interviews • Reflect on the alignment between the goal of the model and the approach to develop it. • Validating interview-derived system structures Participants should bring their own computers with their preferred CLD software loaded. If you do not have software show up 30 minutes early to learn and get a quick intro into KUMU software. Participants should have knowledge of the components and structure of CLDs, and please be prepared to interact with others.
