Abstract for: From VUCA to Vision: An Embedded Systems Leadership Model for Adaptive Organizations
Organizations today operate under growing volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, making traditional leadership approaches increasingly insufficient. Global disruptions such as pandemics, geopolitical tensions, and socioeconomic shifts challenge firms’ capacity to anticipate and respond effectively. Emerging research highlights the need for leadership models that integrate relational, contextual, and systemic perspectives. This paper introduces an approach that connects VUCA theory with embeddedness and systems thinking to strengthen adaptive organizational leadership in turbulent environments. The paper synthesizes three complementary theoretical lenses—VUCA, embeddedness, and systems thinking—to construct an integrated leadership model. It draws on sociological interpretations of embeddedness, emphasizing leaders’ relational positioning within networks and communities. Systems thinking contributes analytical tools for understanding interdependencies and feedback loops. By combining these elements, the approach outlines how leaders can interpret environmental turbulence, mobilize social capital, and guide adaptive responses through continuous interaction between context, networks, and organizational processes. The synthesis reveals that embeddedness strengthens leaders’ ability to navigate VUCA conditions by enhancing access to information, trust, and coordinated action. Embedded leaders detect emerging changes earlier, activate diverse relational resources, and foster collaboration across organizational and community boundaries. When combined with systems thinking, these capabilities support more accurate sensemaking and resilient decision‑making. The resulting Embedded Systems Leadership Model demonstrates how adaptive leadership emerges from ongoing feedback between contextual turbulence, social embeddedness, and systemic analysis. The findings suggest that leadership suited for turbulent environments must extend beyond individual competencies toward relational and systems‑oriented capabilities. Embeddedness becomes a strategic foundation for resilience, anchoring organizations in socioecological contexts while strengthening adaptive capacity. Systems thinking equips leaders to navigate complexity and anticipate unintended consequences. Together, these elements redefine leadership as a contextual, collective process. The proposed model highlights how future‑ready leadership depends on aligning networks, sensemaking, and adaptive responses within dynamic environments.
