Abstract for: Modeling with AI: Exploring the Future of System Dynamics Practice
In this interactive 90-minute workshop, participants will go through a complete AI-assisted modeling cycle, from a clearly defined problem to simulation-driven insights. The session introduces the sd-ai platform, which supports each modeling stage through AI tools that enhance, rather than replace, human judgment. Working from a pre-selected topic with a provided problem statement and reference mode, the group will collaboratively build a simulating model and uncover why it behaves the way it does. The workshop follows four phases: First, participants use Seldon, the AI discussion engine, to brainstorm causes of the system’s behavior. Then, in Phase 2, sd-ai is used to help translate those ideas into a causal loop diagram (CLD), highlighting how AI can assist with structural reasoning. Phase 3 moves into quantitative modeling, where AI builds a stock and flow model (SFD) based on the insights from the CLD. Finally, in Phase 4, Seldon helps interpret model results and draw actionable insights. Each phase includes group discussion on the role, risks, and benefits of AI. The session concludes with a reflection on how AI may transform modeling workflows inviting curiosity, skepticism, and excitement.
