Abstract for: You Can’t Always Get What You Want: Trying To Make a Good Model Relevant in a Short Attention Span World

RAND and AAMC are building a new model for projecting future physician supply, demand, need, and utilization in the US. We are also trying to communicate what that model tells us to policy makers and those who wish to influence policy makers. The complexity and nuance often inherent in a good system dynamics model are difficult to communicate to audiences who already believe they have the answer to their problem or only want an answer that will resonate in a world where complex and nuanced information is at great risk of being scrolled past. This presentation will tell one story of that messy reality. The problem will be described. Some lessons we have learned will be shared. No definitive solutions are promised, though.
