Abstract for: Agriculture in a climate changed future: Prototype serious game to explore the sustainability of current practice trajectories.
Agricultural activity in Aotearoa-New Zealand is a core economy activity and relies on practices that are coming under pressure due to climate change. While there is broad acceptance that some changes in agricultural practice are required, there is little agreement about what sort of changes and to what extent. This is in part inhibited by a lack of alignment on the sustainability of current practice. This work synthesised the pressures of agricultural production and climate change pressures of drought and flooding in a CLD, to explore the sustainability of agricultural practices into the future. It builds on previous work focused on the dynamics of drought. It is now being developed into a prototype serious game, designed to focus on important dynamics and decision areas important to farmers. The game is intended to be run multiple times with the same players to allow multiple possible futures to be explored. Initial testing highlights most future trajectories are likely unsustainable. It highlights tension between short term and long term financial stability due climate impacts. This game can help support wider conversations about the future of agricultural landscapes in a climate changed future.
