Abstract for: Harnessing AI for Game-Based Learning & Strategic Simulations

System dynamics provides valuable insights into complex problems, yet translating these insights into engaging, interactive experiences remains a challenge. This workshop explores how Generative AI can assist in the design of physical and hybrid games, making it easier to develop simulations that effectively communicate systemic concepts. Inspired by The Prestiige Imports: Innovation Game, a strategic learning simulation created using AI-assisted design, this session demonstrates how AI can generate game narratives, structure decision-making frameworks, and enhance learning through interactive storytelling. Participants will engage in a hands-on experience, using AI to create dynamic feedback loops, develop game mechanics, and rapidly prototype a learning simulation. Through real-time experimentation, they will refine AI-generated content to ensure engagement and educational effectiveness. The session is designed for system dynamicists, educators, and facilitators who want to integrate AI-driven game-based learning into their work. No prior game design experience is required, as AI serves as a bridge between systems thinking and interactive learning. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a functional game prototype, practical AI-prompting techniques, and a toolkit for incorporating AI into future simulation designs.
