Abstract for: The role of airports during the transformation towards hydrogen based aviation
The aviation sector needs to be decarbonized due to already high carbon emissions and increasing passenger numbers. One way to achieve this is through the use of green hydrogen. The physical characteristics of hydrogen and the new infrastructure for distribution and at the airport seem to be the key challenges. It is necessary to know the hydrogen demand at the airport when planning the infrastructure in order to keep the investment as well as the price of hydrogen at an affordable level. A system dynamics model is used to identify the impact of different parameters and to have a closer look at the role of the airports in the topic of hydrogen-based aviation. The focus of this work is on the airport and the decisions that need to be made and incentives that need to be given to airports to start building infrastructure that can be used by airlines.
