Abstract for: System Dynamics and Systems Thinking in Entrepreneurship Research: a systematic literature review

Current research methods in entrepreneurship research have limitations in theorising beyond observed consequences and struggle with capturing unobserved and counterfactual realisations. Previous research has pointed out the relevance of System Dynamics (SD) and Systems Thinking (ST) for entrepreneurship research. Nevertheless, contradictory results are found in their application in entrepreneurship, and it is not clear how extensive is this scholarly conversation. This work in progress aims to answer research questions: How SD and ST is used in entrepreneurship research? What are future research avenues in the intersection of entrepreneurship research with SD and ST? The research questions will be addressed using a systematic literature review. The article selection process for the final sample is ongoing. As preliminary results, SD and ST have been mainly applied or proposed in topics related to entrepreneurial ecosystems, business models, and decision-making. SD and ST are used in entrepreneurship research as a philosophy or theory, as a method or as a perspective or approach. SD and ST have not been combined with core theories and concepts of entrepreneurship research. Research on sustainable entrepreneurship using SD and ST is very limited. The work in progress has two intended theoretical contributions as well as implications for practitioners.
