Abstract for: The backlog problem: addressing the demand capacity gap on NHS elective care

This paper presents a model that aim to respond to this need by illustrating how system dynamics models and simulations have been used to inform demand/capacity discussion in Suffolk and Northeast Essex Integrated Care System. The model focuses on acute hospital care with the aim of balancing demand for elective treatment and the ability of acute hospitals to satisfy this demand. Namely it looks at the number of patients waiting for treatment and the time they wait as it offers opportunities for testing strategies to reduce both indicators. The model and the process presented in this paper aim to offer a blueprint to practitioners and researchers addressing these complex planning challenges within or with the NHS while demonstrating how system dynamics and simulation add value.
