Abstract for: Exploring the Impact of Digital Content Policies to Public Museums - the Case of National Palace Museum in Taiwan

Contemporary museums encountered more complex challenges from many aspects of the social-economic environments. Furthermore, public museums have to satisfy the policy expectations and manifest its implications to public benefits. The National Palace Museum (NPM) in Taiwan has expended it roles during its development process, and interacted with the emerging challenges of the digital technologies. This study conducted a case study on NPM and identified the development stages and the underlying structure when facing the challenges of digital projects. The results showed that NPM played a variety of roles in order to generate not only to traditional impacts to the public but also the impacts to the industrial development, especially to the cultural-creative industry. Four causal loop models are derived accordingly. From the operation perspective, contemporary museums encountered more challenges than ever, and the environment is more complex and dynamic for analyzing the challenges.
