Abstract for:Flipping the Advanced System Dynamics classroom

This paper describes lessons learned while teaching of Advanced System Dynamics, at the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management at Delft University of Technology. The course is an elective for Master students at this faculty that are already familiar with system dynamics modelling. We report on the course in the academic year 2014-2015, the first year when a new teaching style was adopted. Developments in the teaching program leading to the use of a “flipped classroom” approach. In particular, the student and teacher evaluations for working with a more student-central approach are discussed. The evaluation of the course is based on reports from the students and discussed by the teachers. The paper draws some conclusions on the usefulness and role of flipping the classroom in system dynamics modelling. Further, this document includes the full lesson plan, and can be useful for other system dynamics teachers who are interested in a more active learning approach.
