Abstract for:A system dynamics funding model for universities

This paper examines the issue of university funding using a causal loop model and examines the various feedback loops that exist including teaching, research and service. The paper identifies and explains five distinct reinforcing loops and two balancing loops. The paper discusses the implications of this analysis for the various stereotypes of academic institutions: research intensive, teaching intensive and teaching only. Research only institutions are also briefly discussed. The causal loop analysis may be of interest to systems dynamicists but also to practicing university presidents, vice-chancellors and managers involved in funding universities.
